Window coverings are a true need for every house and they can become very expensive, especially if you have close to 20 windows in your house that require covering.  Some windows really do need or grant the expense of investing in quality or specially designed curtains, such as the windows in your living room and dining room.  Other windows can afford a less expensive approach as they are in rooms not often used or only used by members of the household.  Cheap curtains and drapes can be hard to find and what you do find may not necessarily be what you were expecting or wanting.  In some cases, you are better off designing your own cheap curtains or making them yourself. They will end up looking better and certainly more creative if you do it yourself.  You’ll be surprised just how simple and easy some options for cheap curtains and window treatments really are.

Here are some ideas for cheap curtains:

Café Curtains

These cheap curtains are really charming on a set of narrow tall kitchen windows.  Begin by selecting a pair (or more depending on how wide the window is) of linen tea towels.  Fold over the top 2 inches of the long end of each, press with a hot iron and sew creating a pocket for the curtain rod to slide through.  Select the type of curtain rod you wish to use; either one that will suspend between the window frame itself or one that will attach to the outside of the window frame.  Install the curtain rod halfway down the length of the window and hand the curtains for the true café curtain look. These are cheap curtains that can be made quickly and changed often for cleaning.

Handkerchief Valance

A cheap curtain idea and a great way to use vintage men’s handkerchiefs!  The fullness of the valance will depend on the width of the window and how many handkerchiefs’ you have on hand.  For the fullest effect your finished product should measure 50% more than the measurement of the window. Lay out all of the handkerchiefs in a row and sew each of them together along the outside edges where they each meet.  Once finished, fold down the top 2 inches of the panel you have created and sew in order to create a pocket for the curtain rod.

Ribbon Striped Curtain Panels

If you can get your hands on a pair of sheer cheap curtains (search your local thrift stores or Value Village) then all you need is organza ribbon to jazz them up and add some personal style to the room.  Michael’s always has regular sales on their ribbon so check their flyer weekly for specials.  Select an organza ribbon that is at least 1-2 inches wide for the best effect.  Measure the length of the cheap curtains that you found and decide how many rows of ribbon you want.  Rows that are 5 inches apart are most appealing.  Determine the amount of ribbon required and buy accordingly.  Then pin the ribbon to the curtain panels and sew into place.  Although time consuming, sewing along the long end of each side of the ribbon is best. You can even experiment with iron on fuse tape but I recommend testing a small section first.
